"Glad to've met you" - to somebody im not at all glad i met. if you want to stay alive, you have to say that stuff, though.
at first i wasn't really sure if Holden realized that he was being a phony here or not. But when i read it over a couple times it really seems as though Holden is making an excuse for himself. that the phony things he does are just things that people have to do if they want to survive life. Which really makes me upset because it shows me that Holden cant take responsibility for himself. that its never HIS fault, but rather something else - It's like he is giving himself a get out of jail free card.

I didnt really think of Holden this way so I it makes me think of him in a different way.... I don;t know if agree though but we will have to see
ReplyDeleteThis is interesting...I sometimes think Holden is just plain selfish too. It's obvious people care about him; Mr. Spencer, his sister, even Ackley. He's shown us he's intelligent and definitely has the potential to just work at prep school, get through it, and move on with his life...yet...he doesn't. Instead of making excuses...just do it! (This might very well be the 'adult' talking though ;)
ReplyDeleteI think it is still a little early to really see but i agree so far with what you are saying about holden. Holden is looked at so many different ways so far.
ReplyDeleteahh, you make some very good points. I think that that is a very good observation.
